A Tipi is a home. (It has two spellings! And is pronounced teepee) A great number of different tribes across the Canadian Praries and North America made their homes in Tipis. The Inuit use a similar structure with driftwood and animal skins called a tupiq. Permanent homes were made from natures materials, called wigwams and were not designed to be moved as families put down their roots. They often housed from 2 to 20 people and up to around 40. Similarly to today, the men made the structure and the women painted and decorated it. These structures became symbols of cultural identity, community and connection to the land. They are still used today, though more commonly as meeting places. All were homes with color, brilliance; a place where life was surrounded by love, activity and hard work.
This is something most can identify with. It does not matter if your home is a tipi or a mansion, it is your home. It has value to you. The people within it and the items you place within your home are precious. They form a special place in your heart.
In this country, an English judge and politician called Edward Coke, became the first Lord Chief Justice of England, and he lived in a mansion. He became well known for positioning himself to protect the rights of the people. As far back as 1604 he created a common law ruling that stated that “an Englishman’s home is his castle”. He established the protection of private property and which set limits on how sheriffs could enter houses, especially for tax collection or law enforcement. It was a powerful moment that give people the right to privacy and protection in their own homes.
This formed the basis of the protections we are entitled to today, which has historical significance. The law was formulated for the protection of the people and it continues to evolve and grow. Similar tensions exist today between law and state.
Use those rights of protection for you, your family and property. There are a large number of tools and law that are designed for you to use.
